Release stress, tap into your power: Everyday anxieties, responsibilities, and the constant stream of bad news really has our stress hormones going these days. The average person’s stress response is triggered 50 times a day! If you have a very stressful job, it may be closer to 100!

What happens in the body: Our respiratory rate increases. Blood is shunted away from our digestive tract and directed into our muscles and limbs. Our pupils dilate. Our sight sharpens. Our impulses quicken. Because the body’s systems are prepared for fight or flight, less energy is invested in long term systems – like the healing immune system. Thus the affects of stress range from fueling cancer to raising the risk of heart attacks.

Because stress is a physiological function, it deserves a physiological answer. We need to move, breath, and release that trapped fight or flight energy from our system. I’ve always been very sensitive to the effects of stress personally, so I discovered long ago that daily exercise works for me to release stress, (or as I call it, “get my ya-yas out”).

Yoga is ideal for this because not only do you really sweat, move and exercise, but you get into all those little nooks and crannies where we hold tension, and you practice  to calm the mind. It feels amazing, and that is why I love a vigorous yoga practice.

How do you release stress? The discussion can begin over at the blog!

I will be teaching an All-levels class outside near the tower at Rockford Park this Friday! The weather looks ideal, so tell your friends and bring your mat – it’s just a $10 donation. I will also be giving special discounts on private yoga to all attendees! We had an amazing evening last time at the Art museum, so don’t miss it.
